Ke$ha May Need to be Tamed but, Miley Doesn’t

Miley Cyrus may be trying to grow up as a musician but, that doesn’t mean she should be pulling a Britney Spears right away. The 17 year old recently released a new song called “Can’t be Tamed.” You can already tell that this song is a step in the wrong direction, only by the title. Miley shows a very new and all of a sudden “mature” side of herself that clearly shows that fame has gotten to her head. The production of this song might have been an attempt to present Miley with a new sound and new persona but, perhaps she would have been better off without the change.

“Can’t be Tamed” is, as the title states, about how Miley can’t be tamed and how we can’t change who she really is. As a former Disney child star, you may be wondering what exactly needs to be ‘tamed’ about her. Cyrus isn’t as rebellious as she’s setting herself up to be. Any scandals she’s been involved in either had to do with explicit photos of herself or the 20 year old underwear model, Justin Gaston, she was dating. Is she really telling us that explicit photographs and dating older men is what she’s all about? Miley is very conceited in the song, to the point where it’s absurd and annoying. Every guy everywhere just gives me mad attention/Like I’m under inspection/I always get the 10′s/’cause I’m built like that/I go through guys like money flyin’ out of their hands. Instead of pulling herself away from any nasty rumors and comments made about her lifestyle and choices, she is just digging deeper into her grave.

The meaning behind the song is not the only difference we see from Miley’s usual style, but so is the sound. I almost get the sense that while working on “Can’t be Tamed,” Miley was listening to Britney Spears. The song seems to have a very similar synth that’s present on Spears’ Blackout album and there is definitely some sort of incorporation of Britney’s style. The music is nothing special, or at least there isn’t anything new about the rhythm or beats that we haven’t heard in any other Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan or Ke$ha song. Before “Can’t be Tamed,” Miley had her own, original style. Whether that style is loved or hated, it doesn’t matter because it was her own, with no strings attached. “Can’t be Tamed” navigates away from her originality and into that never ending cycle of cliché, trashy sounding, synthesized pop songs.

Unlike the song, the video for “Can’t be Tamed” is actually not your every day video. The costuming and effects are amazing and the concept is very intriguing. Unfortunately, the content of the video is too mature and dark for Miley to handle, which results in making it seem like she’s trying too hard. Cyrus is seen wearing an extremely provocative, almost barely there “bird” costume, that looks more like “an evil archangel outfit,” stated Roz Zurko from Associated Content, who took the words right out of my mouth. Zurko also commented on the pair of gigantic and grotesque wings Miley is wearing, that are more “gargoyle like than they are pretty.” In the video, Miley and her entourage dance suggestively – constantly rubbing up against one another. Along with the unnecessary grinding, throughout the video, Miley’s choreography is a little too inviting. She is exploiting her own sexuality to show us and the music industry that this is her “growing up.” If Miley was really as mature as she’s trying to be, she would have realized that “growing up” doesn’t mean drastically going from partying in the U.S.A to not being able to be tamed.

“Can’t be Tamed” is set to be the single off of Miley’s new upcoming album that will be released in June. I hope that the majority of her album is not similar to “Can’t Be Tamed.” If it is, then I think it’s safe to say that we have lost our little Hannah Montana to the dark side. And we all had such high hopes for her…

I frankly can’t stand Miley Cyrus because she is just so full of herself and she does whatever she wants to do and no one ever tells her weather it’s right or wrong (besides us, the public). She is praised by everyone in the music industry and honestly I liked her better when she was a good girl like Selena Gomez. Selena is very mature and confident and I really would like it if Miley was just a little bit like her. Miley is just taking “growing up” the wrong direction like in her music video for “Can’t be tamed” but whatever. Miley is almost 18 and if she wants to act and dress all sexual then go ahead but she better not be complaining on how people critisize her too much or all the rumors running around because it’s all her own fault.

    I disagree.
Of course Miley is – like you said, “growing as a musician” so her music and image is going to change. But you really have to think of the industry they are in. Personally I never really listened to Miley because I always thought of her as a Disney pop-star, but lately she has caught my attention and I think that’s one thing she is trying to do, to get an older audience. I mean she can’t be singing “best of both worlds” because then she’ll just have an under 12 audience fan base. I think she’s doing a fine job – she has no sex tape or she’s never been caught doing drugs.
She’s a teenage girl who is taking chances and being talked about world wide (like this article) good or bad press her name is still printed. I think she’s doing just fine.

I have to disagree, and say that this article is a bit too closed minded. It suggests that Miley is not old enough to be dancing, “grinding”, in her new video, yet this is the way we dance. Just because we dance this way, does not mean we are asking anything more. Miley is going through many changes, she’s growing up! That’s what we do as we get older. We can’t expect her to be Hannah Montana forever, especially as she is almost going to be eighteen. Many people have started from Disney, and evolved to become great successful individuals. If this is what Miley wants for her career, who are we to judge, because we are not forced to be her fans. If people don’t like it then they should just not bother with it.
Anywho, I think it would be much more disturbing and wrong if Miley was 20 years old and still putting on the blonde wing, as Hannah Montana.

I think my last line is being taken a little too literally. I certainly do not expect Miley to be Hannah Montana forever and I do agree that it would be strange for her to still keep that act up as she gets older.

Of course Miley is “growing up,” my point here is that she could definitely be showing us that she is growing up in a different way. Frankly, I never got the memo that growing up meant “Hey, now that I’m 17 I’m going to start grinding in my videos, wear skin tight leather clothing and start singing about what a wild, cocky teen I am.” The message in her song was basically that we can’t change who she “really” is, and she could have gone about it a different way. Instead she went about it quite sexually, and considering that she’s supposed to be a role model to all her fans, I don’t think it was the right move for her to take.

And what about the other Disney stars? Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato, for example, have young fans just as Miley does – yet they show a grown up side of themselves in their music without being sexual or conceited. Their songs are mature enough for older audiences and fun enough for younger audiences as well. Mitchel Musso is another Disney star that transitioned from being a young boy on Hannah Montana to a young man with his own image. He completely transformed in his music and appearance, but he did it in a pleasant, subtle way, and it was welcomed rather than frowned upon.

If Miley is telling us that this is how she’s growing up, then she is telling every girl out there that they need to be raunchy to show that they’re grown up; I think that is the last thing the female gender needs.

    I totally agree with Chrissy.

I really like this topic. Some people dont understand that Miley Cyrus is just growing up.she was a former Disney child star but time changes and people get older and move on with there lives. i didnt like Miley before but now i just keep liking her more and more.if you seem not to get that then wait till your a lilttle older maybe then you will understand then.
