Are You A Magnet? Cuz I’m Attracted To You
As a 24 year old female in New York City, it’s (evidently) a wonder why I have avoided the bar scene since I completed my undergraduate degree two years ago. Counting down the days to Friday—which starts on Sunday–is clearly the American way, but I often get to Friday and forget what I was counting down for. I’m not saying I don’t enjoy a couple days off, but I struggle with my conflicting feelings towards the night scene: should I get a full night’s sleep and wake up ready to take on the world, or should I be a “normal” young woman in this city, let loose, and participate in the (apparent) only opportunity to meet men? This is an argument I have with myself every weekend, yet the former voice almost always wins.
Because of this ongoing pattern, discovering Men’s Health Magazine’s article entitled “Meet More Women Online” was quite thrilling, as it provides valid arguments for my go-to-bed-early weekends [sorry friends!]. Associate Editor, Carolyn Kylstra, explains that the likelihood of meeting a potential partner at a bar on a Saturday night is equal to meeting one at church on Sunday mornings. Additionally, less than 6% of women have sex within two days of meeting someone new (yeah girl power!!). Not so shockingly, the article then promotes online dating by mentioning that roughly 17% of newly married couples met online, and 20% of currently dating couples met online.
In a country where short bustier dresses are popular and drink specials dictate plans for each night of the week, it’s interesting that nightlife solely yields fuzzy memories, less cash, and Sunday on the bathroom floor. I know I’m biased on the subject, but I might be spending my future Saturday nights on the internet…
